I have extensive training in these modalities of care and am able to provide them to you throughout your pregnancy, labor and birth, postpartum and beyond.

The PACKAGES I offer combine the following techniques in useful combinations.  Any of the below modalities may be added to the package you choose for a more customized solution for your unique needs. Many are also available a la carte.

ABDOMINAL THERAPY COLLECTIVE

(for women in any stage of life)

  • Gentle non-invasive massage to guide organs into optimal position
  • Support of organs improves function of organs
  • Addresses misalignment or congestion in reproductive organs, including post surgery
  • Facilitates healing with digestive and urinary system disorders
  • Improves circulation to reproductive and digestive components
  • Releases physical and emotional tension
  • Can aid in fertility, impotence, overall well-being, and help prevent chronic disease

What are Abdominal Therapy Collective tecniques?
The Abdominal Therapy Collective Techniques are a non-invasive, external, massage technique. When applied, they guide internal abdominal organs into their proper position for optimum health and well-being. The techniques work by relieving congestion and blockages to improve the flow of chi and fluids of the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems to prevent the progression of chronic disease symptomology. This results in improved organ function by releasing physical and emotional congestion from the abdomen. These techniques are effective for both men and women.

How do the techniques work for women?
This external massage gently lifts and guides the uterus into its optimal position in the lower pelvis. The uterus is held in position by over 10 ligaments. Ligaments, when stressed or strained cause the uterus to become mal-positioned. If the uterus is mal-positioned, women experience a multitude of symptoms.

Is it beneficial during pregnancy?
Abdominal Therapy Collective technique is very supportive of the physical changes experienced by women in their pregnancy. As the baby and uterus grow, additional strain is put on the uterine ligaments, pelvic floor muscles and pelvic ligaments. Significant posture deviations and pelvic misalignment indicate a mal-positioned uterus, which can cause a variety of pains and also cause labor and delivery to be longer and more physically stressful than need be. Abdominal Therapy Collective helps normalize and maintain pelvic alignment which guides the uterus into a more neutral position in the abdomen. A well-positioned uterus receives good blood supply and grows strong and resilient. With Abdominal Therapy Collective technique, the lower back and pelvic bones are kept well-aligned. Each woman is also taught how to do a special self-care massage so that she can continue her therapy at home daily. This Therapy and self-care massage can be empowering for a pregnant woman, allowing her to actively participate and take steps to address her pain and help keep her uterus more balanced, thereby assisting her baby assume optimal fetal positioning. She feels more relaxed and deeply connected to her baby, knowing she has done what she can to physically prepare for a smoother birth.

CESAREAN SCAR PROTOCOL
Under Development
CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY (CST)
CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system – comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.  Using a soft touch, generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.

By complementing the body’s natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including, but not limited to:

  • Migraine Headaches
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Motor-Coordination Impairments
  • Colic
  • Infantile Disorders
  • Difficulty with Breastfeeding
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Emotional Difficulties
  • Stress and Tension-Related Problems
  • Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Post-Surgical Dysfunction

CST was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger D.O. following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics.  He relied on the findings of William Sutherland D.O. as he developed his approach.

CST FOR INFANTS - Bodywork4Babies™
I am able to offer a unique blend of modalities that include CranioSacral Therapy, The Feldenkrais Method, myofascial release, and gentle massage techniques into a healing session for infants in need of bodywork.

Some of the circumstances that suggest this healing work may be helpful include:

  • Medically-assisted birth (forceps, vacuum) or birth trauma/injury
  • Before/after procedures (tongue-tie clipping, other medical procedures)
  • Breastfeeding Difficulties (including painful latch, preference for one breast)
  • Digestive issues (constipation, vomiting, excessive spit-up, reflux, colic)
  • Unhappy disposition (easy to startle, fussy, irritable, not comfortable in body, overly sensitive)
  • Asymmetrical head shapes or face/jaw
  • Torticollis
  • Babies who favor turning head to one side
  • Babies who dislike tummy time
  • Babies who have difficulty sleeping
DONA CERTIFIED DOULA

I am a DONA trained doula. DONA defines a doula as “a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.”

EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE
Emotional FreedomTechnique (EFT) is a simple and potent tool to that can be used to overcome the normal concerns, fears or insecurities that may arise during pregnancy and during birth.  By creating changes in thoughts and beliefs women can change their experience. The normal shift of hormones during pregnancy often brings great fluctuation of emotions, and often issues that have been unresolved come to the surface.  This is true both during pregnancy and birth.  EFT is well recognized for its ability to facilitate the release of negative emotions.  Many of the physical symptoms associated with pregnancy can also be mitigated or relieved. And once there is greater comfort and ease EFT can be utilized to strengthen your positive thoughts and visualizations of ideal birth allowing you to move forward with greater confidence.

EFT utilizes the same system – the meridian system – that acupuncturists use during their therapeutic sessions.  Rather than stimulating these points with needles EFT creates the stimulations through a gentle tapping or one’s own fingers while repeating short statements about a particular memory, belief, experience or physical symptom.  Past experiences, even past trauma can be cleared away with this method. As the energy meridian system is activated through the tapping, the body memory associated with the incident or belief is transformed.

EFT is safe and can be repeated on your own as often as needed. There are no negative side effects, though tapping on deep emotional issues can bring up unexpected feelings. It’s not uncommon for tears to come when tapping around difficult subjects, and some people feel safer tapping with a professional to keep them on course throughout a session.  Once negative beliefs are deleted, the tapper can switch gears and tap in positive beliefs.  One of the side benefits of EFT is that sometimes other issues resolve that were not specifically being focused upon.

FELDENKRAIS® METHOD
The Feldenkrais Method® is an innovative approach to human improvement and learning.  It is recognized worldwide as an educational process that assists individuals develop awareness of how the body works and supports a capacity to move with minimum effort and maximum efficiency.  Gentle lessons are designed to access the nervous system’s innate ability to change and improve.

Learning to move with less effort makes daily life easier. Because Feldenkrais lessons tap into the relationship between movement and thought, increased mental awareness and creativity can accompany physical improvements.  We improve our well-being as we learn to attend more carefully to ourselves.  We more fully integrate our movements and experience more graceful, connected lives.

During pregnancy Feldenkrais lessons provide an opportunity to improve posture and breathing; to gain greater co-ordination, flexibility and balance; and to ease acute or chronic pain.  Other life-enhancing benefits include greater clarity of thought, refinement of emotional expression, and more efficient functioning in everyday activities and in the activity of birth!

Babies respond very quickly to the subtle movement information provided during a Feldenkrais lesson.  When little ones are not eating or sleeping they are exploring movement, integrating the information and “wiring” their nervous system to increase function.

“Feldenkrais represents a revolution in human health.  Through this method we can learn to improve our living circumstances not only physically, but also emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.”       ~Smithsonian Magazine

“Joanne is a dedicated teacher and practitioner who brings a breadth of experience and depth of understanding to the field of body-mind medicine.  Her demeanor is caring and compassionate.  She is adept and creative in applying this excellent method of movement re-education in teaching both children and adults how to move with greater freedom and ease.”  ~Glenna Batson, P.T., M.A.

“Joanne is highly versatile and able to tailor each session to my needs.  She is skilled, inventive and understanding.  Joanne has a special ability to listen and act accordingly.”       ~Carolyn Glen, Esq.

“Each time I work with Joanne I gain insights about myself which not only enhance my well-being, but also carry over into the way in which I interact with and care for my patients.”   ~Paul Canali, D.C.

“As a therapist specializing in somatic psychology, I have found Feldenkrais to be a fabulous method for non-judgmental self-observations.  Joanne’s eloquence as a teacher made it easy for me to learn how to move with greater freedom and more comfort.”  ~Miriam Lieberman, M.A.

FOCUSING

Focusing is a treasure in my life.

As I read a short article online, I instinctively thought, “I should learn about Focusing so that I can provide it as a service to/for my clients. A quick search seemed to put that possibility out of my reach. However, a week later I received an out-of-the-blue invitation to attend a local introductory class. This solidified my sense that the intuitive response I had to the original article had merit. It didn’t occur to me that developing my own Focusing practice would be transformative in my life, nor could I have known that it would be a 10-year long journey of self-discovery and movement through life’s challenges in order to complete my professional training.

Why choose Focusing sessions?

  • To enhance your capacity to make decisions and creatively solve problems
  • To gain insight into the deeper motivations beneath your habits and limitations
  • To open the door to greater communication with (between?) your body’s wisdom, your heart’s promptings and your mind’s insights
  • To develop greater self-love and compassion
  • To develop greater love and compassion for others

My hope is that as you become a mother, either for the first time or once again, developing the internal resource of Focusing will become a treasure in your life as it has in mine.

Focusing is a body-centered process that provides an opportunity to gain insights and understanding about oneself.  With a Focusing Professional accompanying you as you turn inward and attend to somatic sensations, you discover that Focusing is a means by which you can

  • Gain greater clarity about a particular issue
  • Gain insight for taking action or to cease from activity that no longer serves
  • Develop greater self-love and compassion
  • Develop greater love and compassion for others

Once learned, Focusing is an accessible resource in all moments when you want to be in touch with your felt sense, with your intuition and with the wisdom that your body holds.   Focusing is a tool that supports you in order to:

  • understand what you are truly feeling and wanting
  • surmount obstacles, make decisions and solve problems creatively
  • become more attentive and friendly to yourself and others
  • integrate body, mind and spirit
  • find relief from tension and chronic pain
  • be independent from external belief systems
HUG® Your Baby
HUG Your Baby is an evidence-based, family-friendly program for today’s parents. I am a HUG certified teacher and here to help you understand your baby and care for their needs in a loving way.

The mission of HUG:  Based on child development, lactation and pediatric literature, HUG Your Baby’s trainings and resources help parents (and the professionals who care for them) understand a baby’s body language in order to prevent and solve problems around eating, sleeping, crying, and parent-child interaction and bonding.

Soon after I completed the HUG Teacher Certification, I had this lovely experience:

“I recently attended a wonderful home birth in a small community south of the Triangle. The new mother and father were well supported by extended family, but had not been able to attend any classes in preparation for their new responsibilities as parents.

When I returned for the 24 hour visit I had the opportunity to answer many questions regarding what is normal for a newborn. Towards the end of the visit we all sat down and watched the H.U.G. Your Baby DVD with plenty of pauses for more questions and observation of the beautiful little boy in our midst.

I returned for one last visit, a little over 2 weeks later. It is natural for parents to build confidence in their parenting skills over time and that was certainly the case here. This mom repeatedly mentioned how much the information she had received during our last visit had allowed her to confidently care for her baby. In particular she enjoyed the fact that she could watch for the active sleep cycles that would occur near the time for a feeding so that she could gently rouse him and bring him easily to the breast. She spoke so proudly as she said she was able to attend to his needs and that he rarely cried to signal hunger. In fact at that point he rarely cried at all. I reminded her of the crying chart; …there would likely be some tears ahead. But with her ability to pay attention to his S.O.S.signals and sleep cycles she felt confident that she could minimize his distress and enjoy him to the maximum!”

You will learn about nutrition, exercise, the stages of labor, choices available to you during childbirth, how to be a well-informed consumer, and how to use the Hypnobabies tools for comfort during your birth.  The last half hour of class is dedicated to learning self-hypnosis by practicing as your teacher reads a hypnotic script.  You will go home with the materials necessary to practice and deepen your experience of hypnosis. Your birth partner and other members of your birth team are able to learn supportive practices to help you both learn the techniques of hypnosis and use them during your birth.

In between classes, you will have “home play” assignments to complete, these include reading, exercises and the, all important, hypnosis practice.  As with any new skill, time is needed for learning process; you can plan to spend approximately 30 minutes per day practicing hypnosis by using the scripts provided, plus time for reading,  and incorporating suggested exercises into your routine.

After the series is completed, a schedule will provided to support you as you continue to practice hypnosis every day until the baby is born.  This practice will strengthen the power and efficacy of all the tools you have learned throughout the classes and during your home practice sessions.  Preparing in this way for a positive, calm and joyful birth takes time and focus….and it’s worth it!

“When I was pregnant with my second child, I was very anxious about having another rapid and intense birthing experience. I sought out a Hypnobabies class to help me cope better with the unknown. During the 6-week course, I felt my anxiety level decrease as I began to envision a different, more comfortable, birthing experience. When my birthing day came, I relied heavily on the Hypnobabies CDs and positive affirmations to stay calm and focused throughout labor. With the help of my CDs and my Hypno-doula, I was able to comfortably participate, and this time, it WAS a wonderful birthing experience!”

Donna E.

“…we can say that if the body is completely relaxed, it is impossible to entertain fear. …Complete general relaxation is the ideal to aspire to, but on the other hand, it is astonishing how even imperfect relaxation may alter the whole course of labor.  …if women have tried to learn relaxation and are able to put it into effect, astonishingly gratifying results are obtained, for the discomforts of labor vary inversly to the woman’s ability to relax” – Dr. Grantley Dick-Read  in Childbirth Without Fear

LYMPHATIC BREAST MASSAGE

Lymphatic Breast Massage can relieve breast tenderness, reduce engorgement, unblock plugged ducts, improve skin tone and increase milk production.  .

Most women feel a sense of breast fullness as a normal part of the lactation process as their milk “comes in” in the days following birth.  Milk production begins  and the breast tissue swells as blood, lymphatic fluid and milk collect in the ducts. Along with feeling full, the breasts may feel heavy, tender and warm. When milk isn’t being removed frequently and effectively by nursing the baby, this normal swelling of the breast tissue can develop into engorgement.

In our session together, you will receive a breast massage and also learn a self-care routine that you can continue at home for ongoing relief and to support a high quality of breastmilk. If you choose to learn and practice the routine during pregnancy, you may decrease your chance of becoming engorged when lactation begins.

Why do women massage their breasts?

Lactating women

There’s a growing amount of research suggesting that breast massage may have many benefits for lactating women.

For example, in one study, a group of new breastfeeding mothers were given two 30-minute breast massages in the 10 days after giving birth. Compared to the control group who didn’t receive the massage, these mothers experienced less breast pain while feeding. Not only that, but their babies also suckled more at the breast, and the milk itself contained less sodium.

In another study, researchers found that breast massage greatly increased the quality of breast milk when performed in the first year after delivery. The parts of the milk that improved with massage included the:

  • solids
  • lipids
  • casein concentration
  • gross energy

The most benefits were seen between the first day and 11 months postpartum. The only property of the milk that wasn’t changed in either the early or late lactation period was the lactose content.

Massage may also help improve the flow of milk. An older study from 1994 suggests that the combination of suckling and massage works to both empty the milk ducts and encourage the production of more milk. Massage may also help prevent and treat issues like engorgement, plugged milk ducts, or mastitis, an infection of the breast tissue.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE
Myofascial Release is a safe and effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the connective tissue i.e. fascia with the intention of mobilizing the restrictions thereby reducing or eliminating pain and restoring motion.  Gentle pressure applied slowly over time allows the fascia to elongate.

Fascia is a specialized system of the body that has an appearance similar to a spider’s web or a sweater. Fascia is very densely woven, covering and interpenetrating every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein, as well as, all of our internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord. The most interesting aspect of the fascial system is that it is not just a system of separate coverings. It is actually one continuous structure that exists from head to toe without interruption. In this way you can begin to see that each part of the entire body is connected to every other part by the fascia, like the yarn in a sweater.

Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create Myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.) Many people suffering with pain and/or lack of motion may have undiagnosed fascial restrictions.

AUTHENTIC MOVEMENT
WHAT IS AUTHENTIC MOVEMENT?

Authentic Movement is a completely self-directed form of dance movement therapy in which individuals discover a path that bridges the conscious and the unconscious.

Authentic Movement explores the relationship between a mover and a witness, being seen and seeing. With eyes closed, the mover listens inwardly and finds a movement arising from a hidden prompting, a cellular impulse.

The witness brings a receptive quality of clear attention to the mover. The witness is mindful of the inner world of sensation and meaning. Though personal shadow issues may emerge, the witness accepts the mover without analysis and speaks only when the mover asks for a response. The mover and witness together can achieve a level of perception of self and other that evokes deep respect and empathy.

“The symbols of the self arise in the depths of the body.”  C.G. Jung
